Hello There, Fellow Contestant

I’m not a fan of reality shows.

I have never watched one episode of the Voice (although my wife and daughter have), Jersey Shore, The Bachelor, American Idol, or whatever reality show you choose. I’m not judging if you do. To each his own, I always say. But to me, they are pure drivel.

How is it, then, that I find myself on a seemingly never-ending episode of Survivor from the time I roll out of bed in the morning to the time when I close my weary eyes and try to sleep?

I cannot recall having ever looked into becoming a contestant, yet here I am. And here you are too — a contestant in another place doing different things, yet a contestant nonetheless.

Am I Essential? Are You?

I serve as the economic development person for a mid-sized community in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. This has been a year, which incidentally is not over yet, that none of us will soon forget.

As a certified economic developer since 2009 and a practitioner since Y2K, I assure you that there has never been such a challenging time to be a small business owner or a municipal economic development official in the past twenty years. I truly hope that 2021 takes a turn for the better, but would be lying if I told you that I am counting on it.
