Like everyone, I have a wide variety of interests. I also happen to be a goal-oriented person who sometimes becomes obsessed with self-improvement.

I have read, thought, and written about various aspects of self-help for going on ten years. Am I a better person than I was years ago before reading, thinking, and writing about it? Am I any more content?

Not really. So many things have happened over those years that all the self-help in the world probably could not help me find the contentment that we all seek. But I am a better human being in some ways, just not all. Perhaps not even as many as I have possibly become worse in.

But I am not writing this to elicit any sympathy. If anything, my mantra is to persevere, stick it out, and do what needs to get done. A big part of that for me has entailed trying to adopt the abundance mindset that so many people I know, including my two younger siblings, seem to have naturally.

For me, I am always thinking that spending that next $10k maybe my last or that if someone I know becomes successful and massively wealthy, someone else must be missing out.

I recognize that much of that may be due to me being the oldest of three children and having spent the most time with our two grandfathers, both of who barely survived the Great Depression…
