I recently boarded an airplane by myself traveling from Chicago to Vegas.

Although I have been to Sin City quite a few times by now including about eight times for the world’s largest commercial and retail real estate conference in May, this trip was not for business or pleasure.

It was to visit my ailing father-in-law.

Because Reasons, meaning that I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain why, it fell to me rather than my wife or her brother to make the journey from the northwest suburbs of Chicago to what must be the most Trump-loving town in the U.S. — Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

After driving a seriously crappy little rental car without a working radio through the desert at night by myself for three hours, in the drizzling rain no less, I made it to LHC, where I had an interesting, frustrating, and even a bit of an enlightening trip.

I will not leave you in suspense because I fear that you are ready to click off this story to the next one down the line.

Yes, my wife’s father passed away about two weeks following my visit. My wife had not seen him since our pleasant visit with him and his wife for Christmas in 2019, less than three months prior to a worldwide pandemic taking hold.
