Call for a ‘Gray New Deal’ in Retirement

Most likely due to my thoughts about possibly maybe perhaps reaching the point where I can do the “R” word at some point in time, my Yahoo! feed tends to feed me many stories on the topic.

My typical Yahoo! feed a few days ago featured four consecutive posts about Retirement.

One of them, from Marketwatch, featured an interview with labor economist Teresa Ghilarducci, who challenged the conventional wisdom surrounding retirement, advocating for a comprehensive policy overhaul she terms the “Gray New Deal.”

Her perspective, informed by years of research and expertise, offers valuable insights into the complexities of retirement security in the United States.

Fifty percent of women and 47% of men between the ages of 55 and 66 have no retirement savings, according to the Census Bureau.

One pressing issue addressed is the undue burden placed on middle- and lower-income individuals who lack the financial means to extend their working years, particularly in physically demanding jobs.

This disparity underscores the urgent need for systemic change in retirement policies and practices.
