What Is Food Friendly?

chicken and orzo with goat cheese and feta — one of my specialties

Hello there!

Many years ago, the first time that I witnessed someone photograph their food, my immediate thought was something along the lines of “what a fucking loser.”

Most of us consume three meals per day (I typically consume two plus a gallon or so of coffee for “breakfast”), which adds up to over twenty in a typical week.

Throw in coffee, booze, snacks, desserts and, well, you get it. That is a lot of food and beverages consumed.

Years before I would have even considered “lowering myself” to blogging, much less blogging or posting photos of my food, some of my wife’s friends began doing just that.

Some suburban mom friend of my wife would be at some chain restaurant and post photos of her lunch at Bennigan’s, Applebee’s, Chili’s, or the like.

“Who gives a rat’s ass?” I would say. Once she got sick of me saying things like that, I just thought them — loudly.

So I am not sure exactly when it happened that I succumbed to photographing some of my own food.

Was it at an exorbitant feast at the Bellagio in Vegas? Was it something that I made and was particularly proud of? Was it something at what for many years was my favorite restaurant, Tapas Barcelona in Evanston?
