As a twenty-year-plus certified economic development professional, I have had the pleasure — and displeasure — of having worked in some capacity with thousands of businesses. They range from Fortune 10 companies, those who you have heard of and likely patronized, down to hundreds of solopreneurs and mom-and-pop businesses.

Although it is frequently “easier” to work with a major corporation, considering that many of them come in with a competent team of legal people, engineers, finance professionals, and the like, I prefer to work with the latter: individuals who are chasing their entrepreneurial dream of working for themselves and, hopefully, becoming wealthy as a result.

I could regale readers with many stories that have led up to much of what I have learned, having worked with too many blustery hotshots to count, many of which flamed out dramatically, to soft-spoken, thoughtful accountant-types who went about their business methodically building it up brick-by-brick over the years.

Entrepreneurship and becoming your own boss have always been emblematic of the American Dream. Since the founding of the United States, individuals have sought to create their own businesses and forge their own paths to success.
