When did your personal “sheltering in place” begin?

Personally, I may be a tad late to the working-from-home game. As a quick defense of this, I am a middle-aged Gen Xer who began working full-time for local government entities at about this time of year twenty-seven long, hard, stressful years ago. Some of you may not even have been born at the time.

Also for what it is worth, my first “real” job out of college back in ’93 was as an Adult Probation Officer for what can only be described as one of the most poorly run, ineffective, politically-driven “community corrections” organizations ever conceived of, the Crook County Adult Probation Department located in a hellhole known in these parts as 26th & California. I described it at length in something that I worked on over the course of quite a few years; I forgot exactly how many. It is called The P.O.: A Probation Officer in Chicago.

But this is not about being a probation officer. It only provides the perspective that long before one could share their thoughts and experiences with the world at large with a few strokes of the keyboard, it was inconceivable to me at that time that I would have been a suburban economic development official for eighteen years already in late March of 2020 and plying my trade from home via my laptop on a VPN and my cell phone while earning over four…
